Maria Rita Mata Moncada: The Poetic Monarch of Performance Art

Maria Rita Mata Moncada was born in the community of Vista Hermosa, located in the Municipality of Zacapu, Michoacán, a region renowned as the cradle of Purépecha culture. Since 2000, she has made her home in Uruapan, Michoacán, known as the Pearl of Cupatitzio. Her artistic journey is deeply intertwined with her educational background, holding degrees in Preschool Education and Educational Psychology, alongside a Master’s in Systemic Family Psychotherapy. Additionally, she possesses a specialization in Forensic Psychology, Gender Perspective Thanatology, Human Development, and Couples Therapy, complemented by diplomas in artistic education, happiness and human development, and play therapy.

The Dance Journey Begins

Maria Rita’s foray into the world of dance began at the tender age of eight, starting with folk dance, where she showcased her talent in school festivals. During her university years, she expanded her repertoire to contemporary, tribal, and flamenco dance. Up until this point, her performances were confined to local events within the municipality of Uruapan, Michoacán.

A Breakthrough in Performance Art

In November 2021, Maria Rita achieved a significant milestone by presenting her first solo performance at an international arts festival in Uruapan. Her piece, titled “La Sabiduría del Corazón” (The Wisdom of the Heart), was a captivating fusion of dance, poetry, and music. This remarkable performance caught the attention of one of the festival organizers of the Monarca Butterfly Festival, leading to her invitation to the town of Angangueo, Michoacán, by the international organization “Colores para la Paz” in March 2022. Here, she presented “Metamorfosis,” framed by magnificent monarch butterfly wings, promoting a powerful message of human transcendence, which is a central theme in her thanatological work.

Expanding Cultural Horizons

Maria Rita’s presentation of “Metamorfosis” opened doors to various cultural events, including literary fairs, writer meetings, and art festivals across Mexico. She has graced stages in states such as Michoacán, Guanajuato, Veracruz, Baja California Sur, Tlaxcala, Mexico City, Querétaro, Hidalgo, and the State of Mexico, receiving numerous recognitions and awards for her contributions to cultural promotion.

Currently, she boasts a repertoire of fifteen performances, each addressing diverse themes. Through her performances, she has enchanted audiences with a stunning fusion of physical expression, her own poetic verses, and music, further solidifying her place as an innovative artist in the cultural landscape.

Affectionately known as “La Monarca Poética” (The Poetic Monarch), Maria Rita Mata Moncada has emerged as a pioneer in Michoacán, Mexico, bringing a unique style of performance art characterized by the incorporation of wings, which symbolize transformation and transcendence.
