Born and raised in the vibrant city of Athens, Elena Magiati-Karabis is a multifaceted artist, writer, and organ donation activist. Her life journey is an inspiring tale of creativity, resilience, and a deep passion for making a difference.
Elena’s life has been intertwined with the concept of giving and receiving from an early age. A kidney transplant patient, she has carried her mother’s kidney within her for an astounding 31 years. This deeply personal experience ignited her passion for raising awareness about kidney diseases and the importance of organ donation.
Elena’s advocacy extends to the digital realm. She is the creative force behind the blog “dwrea-zois.gr,” where she shares her thoughts, experiences, and insights as an organ transplant recipient. Her blog serves as a platform to educate, inspire, and advocate for organ donation.
Elena’s talents are not limited to the written word. From a young age, she felt a calling towards both painting and writing. Her grandmother, a painter, passed on the artistic spark, and Elena embraced it with open arms.
In the realm of writing, Elena has achieved remarkable recognition. Her work in raising awareness about kidney diseases earned her the prestigious Panorama Golden Book Award in 2022. At the Panorama 2023 literature festival, she further solidified her status as a wordsmith by winning the Special Jury Award. Her children’s tale, co-authored with Pantelis Hatzis, titled “The Adventures of Roulis Nephroulis,” brings to life the heroes battling kidney failure. Additionally, she penned the pioneering “The Dialysis Glossary,” also with Mr. Hatzis, and has two more books on the horizon, all published by Writers International Edition.
But Elena’s artistic journey doesn’t stop at writing. She has been nurturing her love for painting as an amateur for several years. For her, painting is not just a hobby; it’s a necessity, a way of life, and a profound cultural expression. While she adores working with watercolors, she is continually expanding her horizons by attending classes to master the art of oil painting.
In Elena’s words, “Writing is a deep blue sea, where the soul isolates itself and unfolds. Painting, however, is the breath, the need to emerge with the brush as a lifeline, and the colors are like a rainbow of optimism and strength. In combination and harmony, they capture what one feels, sees, and listens to.”
Elena Magiati-Karabis is a testament to the power of art and the written word to inspire change, bring awareness to critical issues, and celebrate the beauty of life. She is deeply grateful for the talents she has been blessed with, talents that allow her to express herself, exist through art, and contribute to a life-giving culture.
In her journey, Elena embodies the essence of resilience, creativity, and the unwavering spirit of making a positive impact on the world.
