From Ashes to Art: Katerina Solomou’s Creative Journey

Katerina Solomou was born in Germany and grew up in Thessaloniki, Greece. After graduating from a School of Accounting and Secretarial Support, she dedicated 27 years to working at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki before retiring.

Katerina pursued her passion for art by taking jewelry courses at the YMCA. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, both domestically and internationally, and her artwork is characterized by vibrant, cheerful colors. Notably, one of her pieces, themed “Peace,” was gifted to the Greek Consulate in Paris.

Since childhood, Katerina has also expressed herself through poetry, with five of her poems included in the book Poetry: A Road to Dreaming Thessaloniki – Athens. As an amateur visual artist, Katerina utilized the quarantine period to explore her creativity with clay, eventually discovering a fascination with sculptural forms made from recyclable materials. Her hobby is not just an outlet for expression; it reflects her journey toward personal evolution and balanced living.

Katerina’s creations are deeply inspired by her experiences and emotions, aiming to stimulate the viewer’s senses. She actively participates as a designer in the annual fashion show organized by the Friends of the New Waterfront Thessaloniki, showcasing clothing made from recyclable materials. In 2021, she won first prize in the 11th World Art Competition commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution for her model featuring 12 figures made from recyclable materials, titled “The Oath at Agia Lavra,” inspired by Theodoros Vryzakis’ painting.

Additionally, Katerina contributed two works made from recyclable materials to the exhibition “War and Peace” organized by the Writers Capital Foundation. Her artistic contributions have also been published in the book Visual Arts Creators and Creations by M. Michalakis.

Currently residing in Thessaloniki, Katerina continues her artistic journey, primarily focusing on small-sized sculptural forms and alternative jewelry crafted from recyclable materials. She is driven by the mission to convey an important message, particularly to children whom she adores: that nothing goes to waste. Recycling, in her view, is a vital responsibility for each individual, essential for the planet’s salvation.

Katerina eloquently reflects on the destructive impact of forest fires, stating, “The fire in the forest brings a painful end to the fauna and flora. The sight of flames burning trees—the lungs of oxygen and crops—is atrocious. The heart-wrenching loss of birds, reptiles, and animals consumed by flames is devastating.” She emphasizes that forest fires have severe consequences for the environment, economy, society, and human health, leaving lasting scars in affected areas. Katerina advocates for institutional protection to ensure that burned lands are restored and not repurposed.

Yet, amidst the devastation, she finds hope in nature’s resilience: “It is promising that some seeds have life for many years, are resilient, and timidly sprout to regenerate burned areas.” Drawing inspiration from the mythical Phoenix, Katerina highlights the bird’s unique ability to rise from its ashes, symbolizing the power of humans to rejuvenate through challenges. “The Phoenix prompts us to spread our wings with artistic inspiration and emerge anew, shedding the ashes of our past,” she asserts.

A Journey of Resilience: The Life and Literary Contributions of Pantelis Hatzis

Pantelis Hatzis was born in Naoussa Imathia in 1985, the son of Ioannis Hatzis and Agnis Hatzis (née Beka). From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in observation, focusing on details wherever he could discern them. At the age of nineteen, he joined a dialysis program, a journey that continued until he was twenty-seven when he underwent a kidney transplant, with his mother as the donor. Currently, he is undergoing dialysis once again.

Since 2014, Pantelis has served as the founder and administrator of the blog www.nefropatheis.gr and the Facebook group “Kidney patients and transplant recipients of Greece.” Additionally, he is the administrator of the blog www.dwrea-zois.gr and the Facebook group “Organ donation Gift of life,” which was founded by his friend and colleague Elena Karabi, a kidney transplant recipient for 32 years. Together, in 2020, they co-authored their first book, “The Dialysis Glossary,” a pocket-sized resource filled with valuable information for people on dialysis. This book was distributed free of charge to all dialysis units in the country, both public and private.

In collaboration, they also created a fairy tale titled “The Adventures of Roulis Nefroulis,” published by “Writers International Edition,” aimed at providing strength to both young and old fighters in life. This book was distributed for free to children’s dialysis units and anyone who requested it in Greece and abroad. The book earned them the Golden Book Award in the “Children’s Book” category at the World Literary Festival “Panorama 2022.”

Their literary journey continued with another tale, “Litsa Kardoulitsa and the Lost Valve,” specifically designed for children with heart diseases. Their next project was the second edition of the hemodialysis glossary, also published by “Writers International Edition.” This book, with its 85 pages of renewed, upgraded, and illustrated content, provides essential knowledge for those in need. They presented this book at the World Literary Festival “Panorama 2023,” where they received the Golden Book Award in the category “Writing – Medical Dictionary.”

Furthermore, from August 1 to 31, 2023, Pantelis and Elena participated in the Panorama Arts Festival, showcasing their talents in painting and photography, respectively. For their contributions, they were honored with the Certificate of Excellence.

Lucia Pușcașu, born on August 31, 1954, in Horlăceni, Botosani, Romania, is a distinguished artist known for her remarkable contributions to tapestry and textile arts. Her artistic journey began at the High School of Music and Visual Arts “Octav Băncilă” in Iasi, followed by her studies at the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Fine Arts Institute, Bucharest, where she specialized in Tapestry Textile Arts. She later expanded her expertise with a Master Class in “Computer-Assisted Visual Arts, Design, and Advertising” from Stefan cel Mare University, Suceava.

Lucia’s career spans decades of dedication to the arts. She has been a member of the Fine Artists Union of Romania, actively contributing to the Suceava Branch, where she held various leadership roles, including Vice President and President. She currently serves as the President of the “Association of Art and Humanity” in Suceava.

With over 36 personal exhibitions, Lucia Pușcașu has exhibited her works across Romania and internationally, including Finland, Italy, France, Spain, Bulgaria, and Canada. Some notable exhibitions include Thoughts on the Fly (2022) in Ramnicu Valcea, Steps towards Fulfillment (2014) at the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, and The Fortress of Dreams (2014) at the Piatra Neamţ Museum of Art.
