WOUND: Poem by Anu Saji

Yet the rain does not stop.
Water drops rush down the window,
The moon and stars are hidden somewhere.
All of nature is silent,
And they all whisper, “How does she bear this?”
No one can console her—
She is a mother who has lost her child.
They know the pain is unbearable;
Every mother knows the pain.

She wipes her tears and takes the box
She brought for his first day, and kisses it.
“Oh, my son…
How will I live without you?
You were my dream, my world.
Why did you abandon me?” she screams.
All of nature screams together.
“Oh God! Why are you so cruel?” they curse.

She slowly passes her fingers over her stomach
Where her baby once lay,
And touches the wound—the great wound—and cries aloud.
It’s not just a wound; it is her life, her hope.
She feels that it bleeds still,
Nothing can heal it, for it is as deep as her sorrow.
She is a lost mother.
